Friday January 18th

Bell Let’s Talk Day is only 12 days away on January 30.  Let’s all join the conversation on social media! Bell will donate 5 cents to mental health initiatives for every text, mobile and long distance call by Bell customers, tweet using #BellLetsTalk, social media video view, or use of the Facebook frame or Snapchat filter.
42% of Canadians were unsure whether they would socialize with a friend who has a mental illness. Being a good listener and asking how you can help, sometimes just being there for people you care about, can be the first step in recovery.
Listen and ask is the 4th simple action we can all do to end stigma. Here are a few examples of what to ask: I’m sorry you aren’t feeling well. I’ve noticed you’ve seemed down lately. Is everything ok?
If you think that you might be having a mental health issue or a friend is, please reach out to your teacher, guidance counsellor, our school social worker or a principal. They’re here to listen.

Attention All Wildcats:  Second semester draft timetables can be viewed on the Student Portal by clicking on the STUDENTS drop-down menu on Eastview’s Website and logging in with your SCDSB username and password.  Teachers and room numbers are still subject to change.  If you need to request a change of course for second semester, please make a Guidance appointment.  Please note that level changes require parent or guardian consent.  You should not be leaving class to come to Guidance, please coming during your lunch or spare period if you need to make an appointment.  Thanks!

Thursday January 17th

Bell Let’s Talk Day, January 30, is just around the corner and Eastview is helping to erase the stigma that still exists around mental illness.
Did you know that 27% of Canadians said they would be fearful of being around someone who suffers from serious mental illness?
Be kind is the 3rd way that we can eliminate stigma. Simple kindness can make the world of difference. Whether it’s a smile or being a good listener, these simple acts of kindness can help open up the conversation and let someone know you are there for them.
Expressions like “You’ll get over it” and “Just relax” can minimize how a person is feeling. Instead offer your support and say “I’m sorry you aren’t feeling well.” Ask what you can do to help.
Remember that our teachers, guidance counsellors, school social worker and principals are here to listen.

Yesterday afternoon your junior girls volleyball team hosted and competed in Barrie City Championships.  After winning their pool the girls took out Nantyr Shores in the semi-finals earning a spot in the gold medal match vs Bear Creek.  Although the girls played their hearts up they came up short in a very hard fought, close battle, to earn the silver.  Congratulations to all the girls on a fantastic afternoon and evening of volleyball! Coach Kalbfleisch and Gross are very proud of you all!

Yesterday the Alpine Ski team hosted and competed in a giant slalom race at Alpine Ski Club in Collingwood. Here are the highlights,
The level one girls won their third race in a row, though the level of competition seems to be increasing. This squad was again led by Abby McFarlane, Sydney Elliott and Ava Koslowski. Maddy Branden had her best finish of her racing career as well. Emily Elliott and Yuna Sheppard added depth to the team with respectable finishes.
Reid Monteith continued his excellent racing season by finishing 3rd in a field of 102 level one boys racers.
Emily Elliott enjoyed competing at her home club and finished strong with a 6th place finish.
Hale Mahon served admirably as the announcer for the race and proved that he is a natural talent in that role! Thank you Hale for helping us yesterday!

The Eastview Nordic SkiCats hit the trails yesterday at Hardwood, coming away with some impressive performances! Once again, Reid Kidner dominated the Senior Boys race, taking gold. Will Smith was 6th and Jackson Rothenburg was 11th, with AJ Kapty finishing 18th in his first ever senior race.
Sierra Mandonald took bronze in Senior girls, with Molly Trayling finishing 8th. Rookie skier Mia Macdonald jumped into senior after breaking a ski in her novice race and finished an incredible 12th.
In Junior Boys, Colt Penrose took silver, with Eric Good taking bronze.
The junior girls division was DOMINATED by Eastview, as we SWEPT the first seven places and took the over all title!. Gillian Evans took GOLD, with Mikenna Adair taking silver and Hannah Trombley taking bronze, followed closely by Leah Waterfield, Hillary Roye, Jessica Brady and Macy Macmenemy.
In the novice girls category, Ashley Anderson took bronze, with Lauren Nelson finishing a strong 5th place.
Carter Henry finished 9th in the novice boys race.

Yesterday our girls hockey team clinched first place in the regular season with a 4 – 2 win over Innisdale. Alexa Pongo scored 2 goals with singles going to Natalia Smith and Gracyn Emmerton. Jenna Mowat and Kennedy Lynch had strong games and goalie Faith Miller made several great saves.
Congratulation Wildcats!

The junior boys basketball team travelled to Toronto yesterday to take part in the Hoopdome Tournament.  The cats fell short in their first game by a score of 60-54.   But they bounced back to win their final two matches in close scores of 53-47 and 60-55.   A special nod goes out to Colby Redwood who had his best games of the season.  Jayden Scobie, Cal MacArthur and Liam Alexander led the team’s offense throughout the day while Patrick Nightingale and Brayden Folliott were rebound machines!
Great job boys!

Help end the stigma around mental illness. It’s easier than you think!
Language matters: The words you use can make all the difference. Words can help but they can also hurt. Explain to friends who use words like “psycho” or “crazy” without thinking, that their comments may be hurtful.
Together, the students at Eastview can help end the stigma around mental illness.  Remember that our teachers, guidance counsellors, school social worker and principals are here to listen.
