"Now for a special announcement regarding the Poppy Campaign. We ask that you be respectful and invite you to be reflective & consider wearing a poppy.
Today, many Canadians are sheltered & removed from the atrocities of war. Living in Canada affords us the opportunity for freedom of speech, thought & religion among others. We need not concern ourselves with the threat of daily air raids, bombings or landmines. Sadly, this remains a reality for thousands of people today across the world.  While we tend to associate Remembrance Day with World War I and II, we must not forget the millions of people still affected by war today.  Today we remember Canadian soldiers who risk their lives on peace-keeping missions and children like 10 year-old Abdul living in the war-torn country of Israel:

* “The night before we fled, a plane attacked our neighbourhood. It was very dark. We were all hiding. The noise was very loud, so I stayed awake.  We all lay still on the floors for hours. The next morning we ran from our home leaving behind our belongings. On the road I saw houses in rubble and burned out cars.   I saw massacres – people and children being killed without any reason. When we passed that, I had to close my eyes.”
Many civilians & soldiers return from war forever changed. Today we remember them. Please consider wearing a poppy this week. Poppies are available from your homeroom teacher and in the main office. Donations are graciously accepted. "

"Now for a special announcement regarding the Poppy Campaign. We ask that you be respectful and invite you to be reflective & consider wearing a poppy.

So often we take for granted the very things that deserve our gratitude the most.  Sometimes we aren’t able to realize the magnitude of our appreciation, until that something is taken from us.  And so we step outside of our comfort zone at this time of year, as we see upsetting footage and images of war and it’s destruction…..and try to empathize with those who have suffered loss. Loss of limbs, loss of functionality and loss of life.  Today we remember and pay honour to the families that have received devastating news.

Every year, our country honours mothers and widows of those killed while serving Canada, with a silver cross.  Charlotte Wood of Winnipeg was Canada’s first recipient of the Silver Memorial Cross, after her son Fred was killed in heavy fighting in Belgium in 1914 during the beginning of the First World War.  Three years later in the spring of 1917, her son Peter was killed at Vimy Ridge. Inconceivably, Mrs. Wood went on to lose her son Louis, lost at sea board the HMS Hogue; Harry, killed on the front lines at Gallipoli and Joseph, killed at Passchendaele.  Charlotte Wood was awarded FIVE Silver Crosses by the end of World War One.

Today we empathize with families who have suffered immeasurable loss, and unimaginable pain and agony.  Today we remember them. Please consider wearing a poppy this week. Poppies are available from your homeroom teacher and in the main office. Donations are graciously accepted. "

"Diwali is perhaps the most important festival celebrated by Hindus all around the world.

Known as the festival of lights, Diwali celebrates the triumph of good over evil. Hindus celebrate over 5 days by decorating with lights and earthen  lamps, sharing sweet foods and welcoming friends and family to their homes. They also take this time to renovate and rejuvenate their homes with new paint, furniture, or appliances. They bless themselves with the holy flame and pray together.

Happy Diwali to all!"
