Dear Eastview Secondary School Students

I am pleased to have the opportunity to welcome students back to school for the 2020-2021 school year.  It may prove to be an interesting year but if we all work together, I am confident that we can put all of the required safety protocols in place in order to keep you safe and to keep you learning.

When you arrive at school on your designated day, you will be greeted staff members who are there to guide you and give you more specific directions.  Once inside the building please follow the arrows and directional signs on the floor and proceed directly to your class.  Students who walk, drive or are dropped off at school are to arrive no earlier than 7:50 am.  It is essential for everyone's safety that we all follow and respect these guidelines.

As you prepare for the first day of school, here are some important thiNgs you'll need to know.

Secondary school start date

If you are returning to in-school learning in September, you will begin with a staggered start based on your grade. Start dates are as follows:

  • Grade 9 students will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2020
  • Grade 10 students will join Grade 9 students in attending on Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2020
  • All secondary students will attend Thursday, Sept.10, 2020

A staggered start allows for the gradual return of students, and time for learning and adopting new routines and safety practices. The staggered start also provides our Grade 9 students with a day for orientation, followed by a gradual increase to the school population.

If you are in a county class program (social skills, developmental skills, life skills and autism spectrum disorder) you will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 8, and will attend every day.

Secondary school schedule

Your semester one timetable will be based on a quadmester. This means you will take two subjects from September to November and two subjects from November to February, focusing on one subject per week. This alternating schedule limits the number of students in your cohort, and it reduces the number of students you come into contact with each week.

Your daily schedule will look like this:

Student timetable

You may access your timetable by logging into the student portal. The link to the student portal can be found under the student tab on our school website at eas.scdsb.on.ca

Guidance staff are available beginning Aug. 31 to address timetable questions. Timetable change requests will only be considered through completion of a Google Form (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/13b3kKzymosYn7wGJfsIjKHDB9HgteMICdn2JG_9hRxI/edit)

Once you have submitted your request via the Google Form, a Guidance staff will be in touch with you to discuss any changes.  Please note that changes will be limited as we do not have the flexibility we have had in past years.

Health and safety

You will be required to wear a face mask while inside the school building. Please wear your own mask that firmly and completely covers your nose and mouth. We will provide cloth masks to students who do not have them.

Each morning, you are required to complete a self-screen prior to attending school. The self-screening tool can be found here: https://covid-19.ontario.ca/self-assessment/.

If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, you must stay home. You will be required to report your absence by contacting school office staff.

Lunch

You will be required to remain with your cohort during the lunch period. To begin the school year, lunch will take place in your classroom and, when possible, may take place outdoors. You will not be able to leave the school property, so please remember to pack a lunch and bring a refillable water bottle. Additionally, we ask you not to pack items in your lunch which contain nut products as we have several students and staff with life threatening nut allergies.

Please note that there will be no food deliveries to the school.  The doors to the school will be locked at the beginning of classes each day and no non-essential deliveries will be accepted.  These include, but are not limited to, Skip the Dishes and Uber Eats".

Lockers

Lockers will not be available at the beginning of the school year. You will be required to bring your books, lunch and personal belongings to class with you.

Remote learning

If you are participating in the remote learning program, you will be contacted by your teacher in the first two weeks of school and classes will begin on Monday, Sept. 21.

The staff at Eastview Secondary School are looking forward to working with you to ensure a safe and successful 2020-2021 school year.

I look forward to seeing you all next week!

Sincerely,

Jim Sammon
Principal
